In addition to expanding relief programs, the IRS and US Treasury announced a number of other procedural changes that will take effect immediately to stem the ever-growing economic damage caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Federal Tax Filing Deadline Has Been Extended

The official tax filing deadline has been extended to July 15th 2020. Taxpayers are still encouraged to file their tax returns prior to the deadline as tax refunds will still be distributed prior to July 15th.

Penalties and Interest for 2019 Tax Returns Have Been Postponed

Between the original tax filing deadline (April 15th) and the extended deadline, taxpayers will not accrue penalties and/or interest to their 2019 tax bill, however penalties and interest will still be accrued on past due tax debt throughout this time.

New Collection Activities Have Been Postponed

The IRS announced that they will suspend notices of intent to lien and levy taxpayer assets. However, if you have already received a notice of intent to lien/levy or are already being actively collected on, the IRS will move forward with collections.
