The CP71C letter is a restatement of owed tax debt, as well as any interest and/or penalties that have accrued. This notification is slightly different from the general notice, as it is a reminder of your debt that has not been touched for several years.
This notice also explains in detail that you may no longer be eligible for a United States passport.
If you receive this notice in the mail, it is recommended you complete the following:
- Read though the notice carefully, as it will address your principal amount owed, as well as any interest and/or penalties
- Arrange to pay your owed amount in full to avoid further damages
- Learn more about your payment options and apply for a debt repayment plan
- Apply for an Offer in Compromise
